Organic Chilli Seeds 'Ring of Fire'

‘Ring of Fire’ chillies benefit from an early start under cover, as they require warmth to germinate and grow well.

Seeds can be sown from January through to March in trays or small pots filled with a good-quality organic seed compost. Maintain a temperature of around 18–21°C for reliable germination, which usually takes 10–21 days.

Once seedlings are established, pot on into individual 7cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions, around 10°C, to encourage strong, compact plants.

Plants can be transplanted from May, once the risk of frost has passed. They grow best in greenhouses, but can also be grown outdoors in a sunny, sheltered position. Space plants around 45cm apart, or grow individually in containers.

Fruits can be harvested from July through to October, depending on growing conditions. Chillies can be picked while still green or left on the plant to mature fully to red, which often brings deeper heat and flavour.

Regular harvesting encourages continued fruit production throughout the season. Fruits can be used fresh, or left to dry for longer storage and later use.

When harvesting, take care to avoid skin or eye contact, particularly with hotter varieties.

Pre-soaking: Chilli seeds can benefit from a gentle pre-soak before sowing, particularly when starting early in the year. Soaking seeds in a diluted seaweed fertilizer solution for around 8-24 hours may help support early root development and encourage more even germination.

Seed compost: When sowing or potting on, a small amount of frass soil improver can be mixed into seed compost. This provides a slow, steady source of nutrients as young plants establish, without encouraging soft or leggy growth.

During the growing season: As chilli plants move into active growth, regular, light feeding can help maintain balance, particularly once flowering begins. Liquid seaweed fertilizer can be applied every couple of weeks, watered into the soil or used as a foliar feed during periods of strong growth.

Frass can be used alongside this as a light surface dressing during the growing season, watered in to support soil structure and longer-term soil health.

Chilli plants are sensitive to cold and should be protected from frost at all stages. When growing outdoors, choose a warm, sheltered position away from cold winds.

Aphids may occasionally appear, particularly on young growth during warmer weather. Keeping plants well spaced, encouraging airflow and supporting steady, balanced growth can help reduce their impact. Biological pest controls may be used in greenhouses where issues worsen. 

Maintaining good airflow around plants also supports overall plant health and helps reduce stress during periods of heat.

Capsicum annuum

Chillies belong to the species Capsicum annuum, a diverse group of plants that includes sweet peppers as well as many hot chilli varieties. Over time, plants have been selected for fruit shape, heat level and suitability for different growing conditions.

Cayenne-type chillies are known for their long, thin fruits and steady heat, making them versatile fruit to use in the kitchen. While ‘Ring of Fire’ is considered hot, it sits below the most extreme chilli varieties, offering a balance of heat and flavour. Typically, it measures between 70,000 and 85,000-90,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU).

Chilli plants are naturally compact and well suited to growing in pots, greenhouses or sheltered outdoor spaces, where warmth and light are more consistent.
