Organic Chard Seeds 'Fireworks'

Seeds can be sown from March through to August, making it a flexible crop for successional sowing. As it reliably germinates in cooler temperatures.

Sow seeds around 1cm deep. For traditional rows, space drills approximately 30cm apart, thinning seedlings as they grow to around 20cm between plants. In deeper beds or raised planters, seeds can be broadcast and thinned to the same spacing once established.

Once plants are established, begin harvesting outer leaves regularly, allowing the centre of the plant to continue producing new growth. Leaves can be picked young for a more tender texture, or left to mature for larger harvests.

In favourable conditions, chard will continue to provide leaves from early summer through autumn, and often into winter.

Pre-soaking: Chard seeds are generally reliable and don’t require pre-soaking before sowing. However, a soak in a diluted seaweed fertilizer solution of 6-12 hours can help support early root development and encourage faster germination.

Seed compost: When sowing, a light sprinkle of frass soil improver can be mixed into seed compost or added to seed drills. This provides a slow, steady source of nutrients as seedlings establish and begin to develop their first true leaves.

During the growing season: As chard plants move into active growth, regular, gentle feeding can help maintain steady leaf production. Liquid seaweed fertilizer can be applied every couple of weeks, either watered into the soil or used as a foliar spray.

Frass can be used alongside this as a surface dressing during spring and summer, applied every 4–6 weeks and watered in to support longer-term soil health and structure.

Young chard plants can be attractive to slugs, particularly in damp conditions, so some protection at the seedling stage is helpful.

Chard is generally resilient once established, but aphids may occasionally appear during warmer weather. These can usually be managed by encouraging airflow around plants and keeping growth steady rather than forcing it.

Maintaining consistent watering and good spacing helps reduce stress and supports healthy leaf production throughout the season.

Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris

Chard is a leafy vegetable grown primarily for its stems and leaves, rather than its roots. As the botanical name suggests, it belongs to the beet family, sharing close ties with beetroot and sugar beet.

Chard varieties are known for their range of colours, particularly in the stems, which can appear in shades of red, pink, yellow and white. The leaves are broad and spinach-like, with a slightly crinkled texture that holds up well in both the garden and the kitchen.

One of chard’s defining qualities is its resilience. Once established, plants can be harvested over a long period, with leaves picked regularly from early summer through autumn. In milder conditions, chard will often continue growing into winter, and plants left in the ground may reshoot in early spring before flowering.
