At The Shropshire Seaweed Company, we’ve always believed that the best plant care products are those that work with nature, not against it. For years, our Organic Seaweed Liquid Feed has been trusted by British flower farms and professional growers as part of their growing process. It has become a staple in the soil and in the field.
But then, those very same growers began asking us a simple, powerful question:
“Do you have anything organic for the flowers once they’re cut?”
At the time, the answer was no. But the challenge was irresistible.
What Inspired Us to Create an Organic Alternative?
What gave us the confidence to take it on is our background. The Shropshire Seaweed Company is part of Sea-Chem Ltd, which for over 20 years has developed breakthrough biotechnologies in the wastewater and bioremediation sectors. We’ve created natural products that neutralise harmful waste and return contaminated soils back to a healthy, natural state.
In other words, we already had the scientific expertise to understand how to rebalance delicate biological environments and restore life.
So, when the floristry world asked for a safe, organic, sustainable flower food, we realised: if our technologies could clean up petrochemical-contaminated soil on an industrial scale, why couldn’t we also create a product to help cut flowers stay vibrant and fresh in a vase?
That was the spark that led us to develop the world’s first certified Organic Flower Food, a product born out of grower demand, rooted in smart biotechnological principles, and designed to help flowers look their best from farm to vase.
The Biotechnology Behind the Innovation.
At its core, the biotechnology behind our Organic Flower Food is about working with nature’s own systems instead of overriding them.
Conventional sachets take a blunt approach: heavy preservatives to sterilise vase water, refined sugars to feed flowers, synthetic acidifiers to control pH. They work, but crudely, with environmental costs downstream.
Our approach was different. We asked: how does nature already preserve life?
By studying the resilience strategies of plants, we created a formula that encourages hydration, stabilises pH, and keeps stems vibrant, all without harsh synthetic chemicals. Instead of sterilising vase water, we nudge it into balance.
The result? A solution that feels gentler, safer, and more sustainable, for florists, growers, and eco-conscious consumers alike.
What Makes It Work?
Smart, gentle performance.
Bioactive regulators help manage oxidative stress and delay ageing signals in the cut stem while maintaining free water uptake.
Microbiome-friendly, not microbiome-hostile.
We gently suppress harmful biofilm formation while preserving a low-risk, stable vase environment.
Stable across real-world water conditions.
Our ionic balance system keeps vase pH in the ideal range, even in hard water.
Cleaner downstream, safer waste.
Without harsh antimicrobials, leftover vase water is generally safe to pour onto non-edible plants.
Positive Feedback Since Launch
Since launching in April 2025, we’ve trialled the product widely, across British flower farms, high-street florists, and even influencers who grow and arrange their own flowers.
The feedback has been consistent:
1. “It definitely works.”
2. Fewer early droops in sensitive varieties like tulips and roses.
3. Stems appear to drink more freely.
4. Heads hold themselves fresher for longer.
Beyond vase performance, buyers love the story. They value that it’s organic, sustainable, plastic-free, and recyclable, something they can proudly present to eco-conscious customers without compromise.
Why the Product Is Needed
The cut-flower industry is vast. Every bouquet sold worldwide often comes with a sachet containing synthetic chemical ingredients. Multiplied by millions, that’s a hidden but significant chemical load entering wastewater and ecosystems.
Our Organic Flower Food offers a different story. It lets people enjoy flowers guilt-free, knowing their blooms are nourished naturally, and their vase water is far kinder to the environment once poured away.
Why We're Proud
We’re proud of this product because it represents more than vase life, it’s about integrity, innovation, and impact.
1. It’s the first certified organic flower food for cut flowers and bouquets.
2. It was created not just by us, but in response to the voices of growers and florists who wanted a better way.
And most importantly, it works.
In Closing
Flowers add joy, fragrance, and beauty to our lives. Our mission was to help that joy last longer without hidden costs to the planet. With our Organic Flower Food, we believe we’ve created a product that does just that: one that helps flowers bloom naturally, sustainably, and beautifully.
If you’ve tried it already, thank you, we’d love to hear your stories. If not, we invite you to discover the difference for yourself, a flower food that honours both the bouquet in your vase and the world outside your window.
